In 2017, the California Legislature created Elder Parole, allowing inmates aged 60 and older who had served 25 consecutive years to be considered for early release. The law was later expanded, lowering the eligibility age to 50 and reducing the required time served to 20 years—without excluding violent or sexual offenders.
The Sacramento County District Attorney's Office rigorously reviews these cases and opposes Elder Parole for inmates who continue to pose a threat to public safety. Despite these efforts, serial child sex offenders and inmates with violent criminal histories have been granted Elder Parole.
This webpage was created to inform the public of upcoming Elder Parole hearings and how citizens can voice their concerns to the Board of Parole Hearings (BPH). Inmates granted Elder Parole will also be updated to inform the public about offenders reentering the community.
