Sacramento County is proposing a $4.1 million reduction to the District Attorney’s Office budget

These are cuts we have been directed to implement, not ones we support. These reductions would eliminate 15 positions. Which would decimate the Misdemeanor and Community Prosecution Units and reduce our contributions to the Sacramento Family Justice Center which is essential for domestic violence victims.

Let us be clear: this is not the direction we would choose. These are the cases that affect our neighborhoods, our businesses, and the day-to-day safety of our community. Removing these resources will have real and immediate consequences for the people we serve.

What’s at Stake?

These proposed cuts would decimate the units and task forces that respond to the crimes our community experiences every day—resulting in immediate and visible impacts across our neighborhoods and businesses.

The mission of the Community Prosecution Unit (CPU) is to provide proactive response to community concerns and increase accountability to the communities we serve.

CPU focuses on targeted criminal acts and code enforcement issues to ensure public safety and uphold quality of life in our communities.  Community prosecutors address issues traditional prosecutors have not typically handled, such as problem solving for crime prevention, public safety and health matters.  In partnership with law enforcement, the community and public and private organizations, our combined efforts work to identify community issues and prevent crime.

Mail theft is a serious, preventable crime and the District Attorney’s Office will not stand by while it continues. The newly formed Sacramento Mail Theft Task Force will increase coordination between our office, law enforcement and the US Postal Inspector to protect our mailboxes from theft, protect our residents from fraud, and protect the integrity of the United States mail system.

The District Attorney’s Office has dedicated a prosecutor to the Task Force to expedite search warrants and allow the pursuit of state charges without meeting the higher federal loss threshold, providing greater flexibility and stronger tools to hold offenders accountable.

With this Task Force, we reaffirm our commitment to protect our residents and end mail theft in our county.

HUMAN TRAFFICKING TASK FORCE

In 2025 alone, our office filed 66 human trafficking cases. Many of those cases resulted in decades-long prison sentences. Some resulted in life sentences. Those outcomes send a clear message: exploiting human beings for profit will not be tolerated in Sacramento County.

Human trafficking is complex. It involves organized networks, technology, drugs, firearms, and financial exploitation. That is why collaboration matters.

Through the Sacramento Regional Human Trafficking Task Force, a partnership with the California Department of Justice, Sacramento Police Department, and Homeland Security Investigations, we took a comprehensive approach.

From February through December of 2025:

  • 49 operations were conducted
  • 40 arrests were made
  • 124 victims were rescued
  • Firearms were seized
  • Fentanyl was removed from our streets

Those numbers represent lives saved and harm prevented.

When these cases go unaddressed, the consequences don’t stay small!
