PROSECUTOR: Deputy District Attorney Sylvia La Rosa, Mental Health Litigation Unit
On November 28, 2012, Reshawn Butler was found not guilty by reason of insanity of attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon. The charges stem from an attack on a family member, who suffered multiple stab wounds and various injuries including an open-skull fracture and a serious laceration to his neck. Butler was committed to Napa State Hospital for a maximum term of 13 years, with his commitment set to expire on June 23, 2025.
On February 20, 2025, the District Attorney’s Office filed a petition to extend his commitment for two more years. On August 26, 2025, Butler’s commitment to the Department of State Hospitals was extended for two years after a jury found that he continues to suffer from a mental disease, defect, or disorder and currently represents a substantial danger to others.
