On February 23, 2026, Song Landis was convicted by a jury of first-degree murder and felon in possession of a firearm. The jury also found true that Landis personally used a firearm causing death.
Song Landis is a convicted felon who was unhoused and living along the Marconi Avenue area. The victim, Joseph Cano, had arguments with Landis prior to the murder. On February 21, 2022, the victim took a knife Landis wore around his neck and threw it in nearby bushes. The victim then turned his back to Landis. At that point, Landis grabbed a gun from his bag, loaded a round in the chamber, ran to the victim and fired multiple shots at the victim. The victim was pronounced deceased at the scene. Landis fled the scene on a bicycle, discarding his clothing and gun in a dumpster. After being on the run for a week, he was apprehended by the Sacramento Sheriff’s Office.
Allegations that Landis has a prior strike conviction for aggravated battery with a weapon and aggravating factors will be determined at the sentencing hearing.
Landis faces a maximum potential sentence of 75 years to life in prison. Sentencing is set for May 8, 2026, at 9:00 a.m. in Department 14 before the Honorable Tami Bogert.
