Defendant Sentenced for Stabbing Jail Inmate with Shank

On February 28, 2025, the Honorable Helena Gweon sentenced Christopher Berger to eight years in prison. On February 5, 2025, a jury convicted Berger of assault with a deadly weapon. The jury also found true allegation of personal use of a deadly weapon and causing great bodily injury.
Berger was previously convicted of first-degree murder. While in jail after that conviction, Berger stabbed a fellow inmate multiple times using a shank. The victim suffered great bodily injury after being stabbed in his head, shoulder and hands.
Berger will serve the 8-year prison sentence consecutive to the previous murder conviction sentence of 133 years and 4 months to life in prison.
