CASE: Jerrell Nelson (Case #20FE019763)

Jerrell Nelson was convicted by a jury of attempted murder, shooting at an occupied motor vehicle, assault with a semiautomatic firearm and felon in possession of a firearm. The jury found true an allegation of premeditation and multiple allegations of use of a firearm. Nelson was also convicted of misdemeanor charges of possession of marijuana for sale and possession of oxycodone.

On September 28, 2020,  the victim was standing on the sidewalk in front of McClatchy Park when Jerrell Nelson pulled up in his vehicle and parked across the street.  When the victim walked to his own car, Nelson followed him.  As the victim started to drive away Nelson pulled out a handgun and fired 12 shots into the victim’s vehicle, striking it at least nine times. The driver’s headrest was struck with at least one bullet, but fortunately the victim was unharmed.  Nelson then fled in his car, running multiple stop signs and stop lights. The victim was able to identify Nelson as the shooter and the license plate number was captured and matched to Nelson.  When Nelson was arrested, he was in possession of a large amount of marijuana and oxycodone.

Nelson faces a maximum sentence of 29 years and 8 months to life in prison.  Sentencing is set for October 4, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. in Department 10 before the Honorable Ernest Sawtelle.
