CASE: Derrick Lewis (Case #22FE008624)

PROSECUTOR: Deputy District Attorney Colin Stephenson, Vehicle Theft Unit

On March 9, 2023, Derrick Lewis was convicted by a jury of carjacking.

On May 25, 2022, the victim was in line to purchase items at a gas station on Fruitridge Road.  When the victim attempted to return to his vehicle, Derrick Lewis began attacking him.  Lewis struck the victim in the face, knocking him to the ground. Lewis continued to strike the victim in the head while the victim was down on the ground.  Lewis then took the victim’s keys and his vehicle.  When the victim grabbed the steering wheel from outside the vehicle, Lewis dragged the victim on the side of the vehicle as he tried to flee.  A relative of the victim arrived on scene and they were able to get the vehicle back from Lewis.  Lewis walked back to the gas station where he was detained by law enforcement.

Allegations that Lewis has two prior strike convictions for robbery and battery causing serious bodily injury will be determined at the sentencing hearing.

Lewis faces a maximum sentence of 35 years to life in prison.  Sentencing is set for April 21, 2023, at 9:00 a.m. in Department 24 before the Honorable Satnam Rattu.
