Defendant Convicted of Two Counts Attempted Murder

DATE:  December 30, 2022

CASE: Robert Hunt  (Case #21FE008592)

PROSECUTOR: Deputy District Attorney Mai Trieu, Targeting Armed Recidivist Gangsters Enforcement Team (TARGET)

Robert Hunt was convicted by a jury of two counts of attempted murder with premeditation and deliberation.  The jury also found true allegations of personal and intentional use of a firearm during the commission of the crime, causing great bodily injury, and aggravating factors that the crime involved great violence and the victim was particularly vulnerable.

In May 2021, Robert Hunt was attending a baby shower when an argument broke out between the soon-to-be parents.  The expecting mother’s two brothers stepped-in and got into an argument with the expecting father, who is Hunt’s brother.  Hunt then pulled out a 9mm semi-automatic firearm and shot at the two victims who were arguing with his brother.  One of the victims was struck multiple times at close range.  That victim suffered life-threatening injuries, but survived. Hunt chased the second victim and shot at him at least 10 times at close range.  The second victim was not struck, but suffered injuries while running away from Hunt.  The gun used in the shooting was not recovered.

An allegation that Hunt has a prior strike conviction for possession of a firearm by a prohibited person with great bodily injury will be determined at the sentencing hearing.

Hunt faces a maximum sentence of 88 years to life in state prison.  Sentencing is set for January 27, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. in Department 12 before the Honorable Maryanne Gilliard.
