CASE: Hassan Smith (Case #20FE018496)

PROSECUTOR: Deputy District Attorney Courtney Martin, Human Trafficking Unit

The Honorable Patrick Marlette sentenced Hassan Smith to 5 years in prison after Smith pled to human trafficking of a minor. Smith will also have to register as a sex offender for life.

In May 2020, the Portland Police Department contacted the Sacramento Police Department’s Human Trafficking Unit to notify them that they believed that the 17-year-old victim may have been trafficked by Smith from the Portland area to Sacramento. Detectives from the Sacramento Police Department recovered the victim.  The victim told detectives that Smith had her in Oakland for several weeks, where men bought sex from her and she gave the money she made to Smith. Smith then brought her to Sacramento with the same plan. Text messages between the victim and Smith corroborated the victim’s statements. The victim was able to return to her home in Oregon the next day.
