CASE:  Lawrence Batiste (Case #19FE014923)

PROSECUTOR:  Deputy District Attorney Jesse Saucedo, Career Criminal Prosecution Unit

The Honorable Matthew Gary sentenced Lawrence Batiste to 57 years to life in prison.  On March 13, 2020, a jury convicted Batiste of attempted murder with premeditation and deliberation, assault with a firearm, and being a felon in possession of a firearm.  The jury also found true multiple firearm and great bodily injury allegations.  The Court found that Batiste suffered two prior strike convictions for robbery in 2009 and 1987.  Batiste was sentenced under California’s Three Strikes Law.

On August 17, 2019, Lawrence Batiste and the victim got into a physical altercation in the area of 44th Street and 10th Avenue.  Later that night, Batiste returned looking for the victim.  Batiste confronted the victim and fired at least three shots towards the victim.  The victim was struck once in the wrist and once in the abdomen but survived.  Batiste fled the scene and was located three hours later in a motel approximately one mile from the shooting.

In addition to Batiste’s two prior robbery convictions, he has also been convicted of burglary, battery, domestic violence, vehicle theft, receiving stolen property, and drug sales.
