Defendants Sentenced to Life Without Parole for Murder of Teenage Brothers

The Honorable Helena Gweon sentenced Hieu Hoang to two terms of life in prison without parole plus 25 years to life. Richard Saterfield was sentenced to two terms of life in prison without parole plus 20 years.

On May 3, 2019, a jury convicted Hoang and Saterfield of two counts of murder for the shooting deaths of 19-year-old Daniel Murti and 15-year-old Sergio Murti. The jury also found that both Hoang and Saterfield personally used a firearm in the course of the murders and that both committed the special circumstance of multiple murders.

On May 11, 2017, Richard Saterfield initiated a confrontation with the victims. Saterfield obtained a gun from his vehicle and gave it to Hieu Hoang, who shot both victims.  Sergio collapsed and died where he was shot.  Daniel attempted to flee through a parking lot.  Hoang and Saterfield got in their car and chased Daniel.  Saterfield fired several additional shots at Daniel, who collapsed in the parking lot and died.
