CASE:  Angel Burnett (Case #18FE014642)

PROSECUTOR:  Deputy District Attorney Tate Davis, Adult Sexual Assault Prosecution Unit

Angel Burnett was convicted by a jury of assault to commit forcible sexual penetration during the commission of a residential burglary; first-degree residential burglary with the enhancement the victim was in the residence at the time of the burglary; forcible sexual penetration with the enhancement the defendant committed burglary with the intent to commit sexual assault and did in fact commit the sexual assault; and possession of methamphetamine.

On July 19, 2018, a visiting business woman was sleeping in an Airbnb rented Airstream trailer in Curtis Park when she woke to a strange man, Angel Burnett, standing near her bed. When Burnett began to sexually assault the victim, she struggled to resist him and continued to fight back during the assault.  Burnett repeatedly told the victim he had a weapon and wore a backpack he never removed.  Eventually, Burnett fled the trailer and the victim called 911.  Burnett’s thumbprint was recovered from the door frame and DNA matching Burnett was recovered from the crime scene.  When Burnett was apprehended 11 days later, he had methamphetamine in his sock and had a backpack containing burglary type tools.

Burnett faces a maximum sentence of 25 years to life in prison.  Sentencing is set for July 26, 2019, at 10:00 a.m. in Department 12 before the Honorable Maryanne Gilliard.
