CASE:  Steve Vang (Case # 17FE012961)

PROSECUTOR:  Deputy District Attorney TeriAnn Grimes, Special Assault & Child Abuse Unit

Steve Vang was convicted by a jury of child sexual assault committed during the commission of a first-degree burglary, assault with the intent to commit child sexual assault during the commission of a burglary, three counts of first-degree burglary and vehicle theft.  A prior strike allegation for first-degree burglary was also found true.

In 2016 and 2017, Vang committed a string of residential burglaries in South Sacramento.  In June 2017, the then 12-year-old victim was home alone when Vang broke into her house.  Vang found the victim in her room, where he sexually assaulted her.  During the assault, the victim screamed and tried to fight Vang off until he eventually ran out of the house.  The victim ran across the street and called 911 with a neighbor.  Vang dropped his cell phone while fleeing the scene.  The phone revealed web searches for teen abduction pornography.  The victim picked Vang out of a photo line-up, and Vang was later connected to two other residential burglaries within a mile of the victim’s house.

Vang faces a maximum sentence of 64 years and 4 months to life in prison.  Sentencing is set for June 7, 2019, at 9:00 a.m. in Department 34 before the Honorable Matthew Gary.
