Defendants Convicted of Attempted Murder, Conspiracy

Devonta MacDonald and Brittany Gibson were convicted by a jury of attempted murder and conspiracy to commit murder with allegations of premeditation and deliberation, use of a firearm, discharging of a firearm and causing great bodily injury found true.  MacDonald was also convicted of assault with a deadly weapon and being a felon in possession of a firearm with allegations of use of a firearm, discharging a firearm and causing great bodily injury found true.

On February 7, 2017, the victim was walking home from a convenience store in South Sacramento when it appeared his girlfriend, Brittany Gibson, drove up and pulled over alongside of him.  When he approached the car, he saw Devonta MacDonald was driving the car with Gibson in the passenger seat. MacDonald is Gibson’s ex-boyfriend.  After Gibson nodded her head to signal “yes,” MacDonald produced a gun and shot the victim six times before driving off.  MacDonald then backed up and shot the victim three more times.  The victim survived, but suffered life threatening injuries and was hospitalized for more than a month.

An allegation that MacDonald suffered a prior strike conviction for robbery will be determined at the sentencing hearing.

MacDonald faces a maximum sentence of 50 years to life in prison.  Gibson faces a maximum sentence of 25 years to life in prison.  Sentencing for both defendants is set for August 24, 2018, in Department 29 before the Honorable Geoffrey Goodman.

This case was prosecuted by the District Attorney’s High Risk Domestic Violence Unit through a grant funded by the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services and the Violence Against Women Act.
