District Attorney Anne Marie Schubert announced today that her office has declined to file charges against Craig Williams for events that occurred on May 4, 2018, at the 7-Eleven store at 1199 43rd Avenue.

At approximately 9:30 AM on that date, an on-duty Sacramento Police Officer observed an unattended vehicle parked outside the store with keys in the ignition, the engine running, and loud music playing from its radio. The officer turned the engine off and made contact with the owner, Craig Williams, who was inside the store shopping. Eventually, the officer attempted to obtain Mr. Williams’ name in order to issue a citation for violation of Sacramento City Code section 10.36.090, which makes it a misdemeanor for a person to leave their car unattended with keys in the ignition and the engine running. Mr. Williams declined to provide his identification and was arrested for the city code violation and resisting arrest (California Penal Code Section 148).

Based upon the facts presented, we have declined to file charges in the interests of justice.
