Defendants Sentenced for Illegally Accessing State Computer Network

CASE: Jeffrey Rikala & Jonathan Turrentine (Case #17FE004204)

PROSECUTOR: Deputy District Attorney Bruce Chang, Cyber Crimes Unit

Jeffrey Rikala and Jonathan Turrentine pled no contest to illegally accessing a computer network to wrongfully obtain money, property or data.  The Honorable Lawrence Brown sentenced both defendants to 30 days county jail and 3 years probation.

Between October 22, 2016, and November 1, 2016, Rikala and Turrentine were employees of the State of California Department of Technology.  The defendants engaged in a scheme to mine Monero, a form of cryptocurrency, by using State of California computer servers.
