DA Anne Marie Schubert Welcomes AG’s Independent Oversight of Investigation into Shooting Death of Stephon Clark
District Attorney Anne Marie Schubert joined Attorney General Xavier Becerra, Sacramento Police Chief Daniel Hahn, Sacramento Mayor Darrell Steinberg and a number of community leaders in announcing the California Department of Justice (DOJ) will be conducting an independent oversight of the investigation into the officer-involved shooting death of Stephon Clark.
The Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office reviews all officer-involved shootings that occur in the county which result in injury or death. The DA’s Office will be conducting such a review in the case of Stephon Clark. Concurrently, the California DOJ will provide its own independent oversight of the investigation.
“The death of Mr. Clark is tragic,” said DA Anne Marie Schubert. “Any loss of life due to violence is a tragedy. I can certainly understand there is tremendous grief and anger. I also understand there is mistrust by many in our community. We are confident in our ability to fairly and ethically review law enforcement use of force cases in Sacramento County. At the same time, we welcome an independent oversight of the investigation by Attorney General Becerra. While we both agree our job is to follow the facts and the law, we also want the community to trust the process and ultimately the outcome.”
