Prison Crimes Prosecution Team

The Prison Crimes Prosecution Team is responsible for reviewing and prosecuting crimes committed at all state prison facilities located in Sacramento County: California State Prison - Sacramento, Folsom State Prison, Folsom Correctional Facility and the Edward Veits Correctional Center. Referrals include crimes allegedly committed by inmates, staff and visitors, as well as by state prison inmates in transit or in escape status.

The team's large trial caseload involves primarily two- and three-strike cases, including homicides involving potential death penalty allegations. Other responsibilities of the team includes:

• review of officer-involved shootings;
• internal affairs referrals;
• inmate allegations of staff abuse;
• responses to Orders to Show Cause in Habeas matters challenging underlying criminal convictions; and
• extradition hearings resulting from requests from other states for inmates being held in the above facilities.
