PROSECUTORS TO UNVEIL DUI AWARENESS CAMPAIGN
Sacramento County District Attorney Jan Scully
announces that tomorrow she will be teaming up with District Attorney’s
from neighboring counties and the California District Attorneys
Association (CDAA) to unveil a statewide prosecutors' campaign to combat
a rising tide of arrests and accidents resulting from driving under the
influence of alcohol.
"Make It Home for the Holidays" is the theme of the campaign to be
launched by CDAA, with simultaneous press conferences being held by
District Attorneys across the state Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. This event
marks the nation's first coordinated effort by a statewide prosecutors'
association to focus attention on driving under the influence, according
to CDAA Executive Director Dave LaBahn.
The campaign is being spurred by statistics showing DUI arrests and
accidents increasing in California while declining in other states. In
2005 alone, there were 1,719 alcohol related fatalities in California,
LaBahn said. At the press conference LaBahn will discuss the $3.4
million dollar grant recently awarded to CDAA by the federal Office of
Traffic Safety to assist prosecutors throughout the state in prosecuting
DUI cases.
"Too many innocent lives are lost or shattered each year as a result of
people driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs," Scully said.
"California is moving in the wrong direction and as a prosecutor I am
determined to get drunk driving numbers down in Sacramento, and to work
with my colleagues throughout the state to combat the tragedies of
drinking and driving.”
Tuesday's event will feature Elected District Attorneys from Amador, El
Dorado, Nevada, Placer, Sacramento and Yuba Counties, as well as Dee
Pettway whose daughter was killed by a drunk driver as she walked home
from Christian Brothers High School in 2003. Please join us:
Tuesday, December 12th at 11:00 a.m. at the Sacramento County District
Attorney’s Office – 4th Floor John Price Conference Room.
