DISTRICT ATTORNEY GIVES $170,000 IN RESTITUTION TO THE COMMUNITY
District Attorney Jan Scully announced today that during a presentation at
the North Highlands Community Center at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, November
30th, she will disburse monies totaling $170,000 to benefit various
organizations and elementary schools that serve the North Highlands
community.
The restitution monies resulted from the settlement of a civil lawsuit
against Burger King, Inc. The lawsuit was prosecuted by the District
Attorney’s Community Prosecution Unit based upon an investigation by the
Sacramento District Attorney’s Office and the Sacramento County Sheriff’s
Department along with other county agencies.
The investigation revealed that Burger King, Inc. illegally maintained
property at 6819 Watt Avenue in North Highlands. The complaint alleged that
Burger King, Inc. maintained a blighted property in violation of California
Health & Safety Codes and Sacramento County Codes during the four years
prior to the filing of the complaint. Conditions on the property included an
abandoned drive accessible to the public containing solid waste, hazardous
materials, as well as a repeated accumulation of junk and rubbish. Burger
King also failed to maintain signs and landscaping on their property,
further adding to this neighborhood nuisance.
Under the stipulated judgment, Burger King, Inc. agreed to the payment of
civil penalties of $170,000, plus costs. Burger King, Inc. is also
permanently enjoined and restrained from directly or indirectly maintaining
other blighted property within California.
