Gang Unit, (916) 874-4631
District Attorney Jan Scully announced the return of
a jury verdict in the case of People v. Bobby Chiu and Tony Hoong for
the first-degree murder of Roberto Treadway. The jury found both
defendants guilty of that murder, and also found true allegations that
the murder was committed for the benefit of a criminal street gang known
as Hop Sing. Both defendants face a sentence of 50 years to life and
will be sentenced on July 19th at 3:00 p.m. in Department 42 of the
Superior Court.
Supervising Deputy District Attorney Rod Norgaard,
who prosecuted the case, indicated, “Both defendants were members of a
notoriously violent gang known as Hop Sing. The defendants, along with
other Hop Sing gang members, were awaiting a gang confrontation in front
of McClatchy High School. When their rival gang did not show up they
instigated a fight with a group of students walking northbound on
Freeport Boulevard. During that fight, defendant Hoong stabbed the
victim. Another outstanding subject, Rickie Che, then shot the victim in
the back of head.”
