District
Attorney Jan Scully announced today that Luis Saravia was found guilty by
jury on seven counts related to a sexual assault and kidnap that occurred on
July 30, 2003. The defendant will be sentenced before the Honorable Michael
T. Garcia on December 3, 2004, at 8:30 a.m. in Department 23.
At the time
of the assault the defendant was a working as a technician for a
subcontractor affiliated with Comcast Cable. On the day of the assault Mr.
Saravia was scheduled to disconnect cable service for the victim’s next-door
neighbor. The victim, who was nineteen years old at the time, and who is
severely disabled, was outside moving the trashcans on the side of her home
when she was encountered by the defendant. When the victim went back inside
her home she complained of being in pain and of having being touched. The
victim was then taken to the hospital where forensic evidence was recovered,
confirming the assault by defendant. Additionally, the image of defendant
lifting the victim over a small fence just prior to the assault was captured
on a neighbor’s surveillance videotape.
The
defendant had a history of such behavior, having been convicted of nine
sexually related priors from the state of Oregon. Deputy District Attorney
Scott Triplett said, “Mr. Saravia is brazen and callous individual with a
repeated history of violating the most vulnerable people in our society.”
