District Attorney Jan Scully announced today
the return of a jury verdict in the case of the People of the State
of California v. Jeffery Gray. Defendant Jeffery Gray shot his girlfriend,
Agnes Elias, in Lemon Hill Cemetery, off of Stockton Boulevard. After
deliberating for several days the jury found defendant Gray guilty of
Murder in the Second Degree, and also found that the defendant used
a firearm in the commission of the murder.
Jeffery Gray will be sentenced on July 23, 2004,
at 9:00 a.m. in Department 30 of the Superior Court. He faces a maximum
sentence of 40 years to life. Deputy District Attorney Anthony Ortiz,
who prosecuted the case, told jurors that this was a classic case of
domestic violence. Mr. Ortiz was quoted as saying, "This is why
we take all domestic violence cases seriously. The domestic violence
cycle, unless broken, can result in fatal consequences."
