District Attorney Jan Scully announced today
that Scott Eric Gmitter, age 34, pled guilty to seven felony counts
of child molestation pursuant to a plea agreement. Under the agreement,
Mr. Gmitter will receive a sentence of 105 years to life in state prison,
with no opportunity to appeal. He will be sentenced in Superior Court
on July 9, 2004.
Mr. Gmitter, an elementary school teacher, was
charged with acts of child molestation which occurred in Folsom, California
during 2002 and 2003. None of the acts occurred at the school at which
he was employed. Although there were considerably more than the seven
victims charged in the complaint, only seven counts were needed to obtain
the appropriate life sentence.
Deputy District Attorney Laura West stated, "We
have been vigilant in protecting the privacy rights of the minor victims
and their families, while ensuring that Mr. Gmitter is appropriately
punished for the crimes he committed, and the trust he betrayed."
