District Attorney Jan Scully announced today
the return of a First Degree Murder conviction in the case of the People
v. Larry Roach. On June 17, 2003, victim Christine Cheatham was shot
in front of the California Place Apartments on Valley Hi Drive o the
day of a funeral for Wesley Hunter.
The jury took less than 24 hours of deliberations
to return the verdict of First Degree Murder, along with gun use and
gang enhancements. Deputy District Attorney Hilary Bagley, who tried
the case stated: "This was a classic example of a violent gang
retaliation murder, and our community needs to be aware that the District
Attorney's Office treats these matters very seriously." Defendant
Larry Roach faces a sentence of 50 years to life in prison and will
be sentenced in April.
