Jan Scully announced today the conviction of California Department of
Corrections, Sergeant Richard Neal Saunders for knowingly and intentionally
filing a false report regarding the commission or investigation of a
crime.
On June 8, 2002, at California
State Prison-Sacramento, Sgt. Saunders knowingly submitted a materially
false report regarding the circumstances surrounding the beating of
an inmate at that institution. Sgt. Saunders plead guilty to a misdemeanor
violation of Penal Code Section 118.1 and was sentenced by Judge Timothy
M. Frawley to a period of informal probation including 300 hours of
community service and fines totaling $600. A co-defendant is scheduled
for trial in Sacramento County Superior Court on March 9, 2004.
