CASE OF INTEREST
Date: February 19, 2004
Case: People v. Thomas Eugene Jackson (02F10017)
Contact: Dick Margarita, Insurance Fraud Unit, (916) 874-8952
Sacramento County District Attorney
Jan Scully announced on February 18, 2004 the sentencing of Thomas Eugene
Jackson to six years and four months in state prison for insurance fraud
by Judge Jane Ure. On December 17, 2003, Jackson entered guilty pleas
to nine counts of embezzlement, and admitted enhancements for aggravated
white-collar crimes totaling $586,096.62.
Jackson, age fifty-five, a former
claims adjuster for Zurich and Progressive Insurance Companies, utilized
his position of trust and authority to issue fraudulent auto insurance
claim checks to his associates, who were not involved in actual automobile
accidents.
The investigation of Jackson was
conducted by the California Department of Insurance, Fraud Division/Urban
Auto Task Force, Sacramento County District Attorney's Office, and California
Highway Patrol. Deputy District Attorney Dick Margarita said, "a sentence
of this magnitude should serve as a future deterrent to those who even
contemplate such sophisticated white collar crimes."
