Case: People v. Paul Eugene Robinson
CONTACT:
Lana Wyant, Deputy District Attorney, (916) 874-5907
District Attorney Jan Scully
announced today that Paul Eugene Robinson was sentenced to the maximum
term of 65 years in state prison for five counts of sexual assault occurring
in August 1994.
Paul Robinson's conviction is
the first conviction in the State of California for a case based upon
the filing of a "John Doe" warrant. This warrant identified the defendant
through his DNA profile. In September 2000, Paul Robinson was identified
as the individual named in the warrant through a "cold hit" in the California
Department of Justice Convicted Offender Database.
In addition to the crimes for
which the defendant was convicted, Paul Robinson was identified through
other evidence, including DNA, to a series of sexual assaults that occurred
in the Cal Expo area between 1993-1994.
The investigation in this case
was the result of extensive work done by the Sacramento Police Department,
the Sacramento Sheriff's Department, the Sacramento District Attorney's
Crime Laboratory and the California Department of Justice Crime Laboratory.
Special recognition should be
given to Sacramento Police Department Detective Pete Willover who diligently
and effortlessly pursued the identification of the defendant in this
case.
