Case: People v. Jessica Langshaw & Raul Umana
Contact person: Michael Blazina, Deputy District Attorney,
Felony Team 2, (916) 874-5829
District Attorney Jan Scully announced today
that Jessica Langshaw (20) of North Sacramento pled no contest to six
felony counts of attempted extortion, five felony counts of sending
threatening letters, and three misdemeanor counts of falsely reporting
crimes to law enforcement. Raul Umana (28) of North Sacramento pled
no contest to three felony counts of attempted extortion and three felony
counts of sending threatening letters. As a condition of the pleas,
the court promised that Langshaw would receive no more than one year
in the county jail at the outset and that Umana would be sentenced to
no more than two years in state prison.
Langshaw accused eight men of sexually assaulting
her in separate incidents spanning over approximately a one and a half
year period of time. She sent letters to five of these individuals demanding
that they pay her money to keep the alleged assaults in confidence or
she would pursue criminal charges and civil suits against them. In addition,
she demanded that two of them additionally transfer ownership of their
motorcycles to her. She also sent letters to two of the men's parents
warning that she might sue them. In a recorded phone call, she demanded
money to keep the alleged assault out of court and to not press charges.
Umana delivered or accompanied Langshaw in delivering three of the letters.
Umana negotiated with one of the victims regarding the amount that he
should pay. Langshaw falsely reported to law enforcement that three
of these individuals had raped her.
Sentencing is scheduled for June 13, 2003, at
9:00 a.m. before the Honorable David Abbott in Department 14.
