Uncommon courage. That is the characteristic
shown by the seven individuals receiving the Sacramento County District
Attorney Outstanding Citizen Award. Each of these people testified
in criminal cases and demonstrated extraordinary bravery and social
conscience through their cooperation with our criminal justice system.
This year’s recipients include the following individuals:
Mary Ann D. is a developmentally &
physically disabled woman who was sexually assaulted, chocked unconscious
and beat in the head with a hammer.
Laura Pierson’s quick thinking and actions
prevented a tragedy at Barrett Middle School when a 13-year-old student
burst into her 8th grade science classroom with a loaded
.22 caliber revolver.
Madeline B. and her daughter were confronted
in their home by a burglar who not only committed a robbery and carjacking,
but who also committed forcible sexual offenses against Madeline in
the presence of her daughter.
Rod Garcia witnessed shots being fired
into a crowd in front of a downtown restaurant. Mr. Garcia followed
the shooter’s car to West Sacramento, flagged down a police officer
and informed them what he had witnessed.
Sheri Tomkins testified in a gang related
murder case after a young man she supervised confided to her he was
leaving town because he was being accused of murder. Ms. Tomkins asked
him if the accusations were true and defendant admitted the crime to
her.
Jaime Koverman, a victim of domestic violence,
was discovered by law enforcement at her home with life threatening
injuries which she received at the hands of her husband, the defendant.
