District Attorney Jan Scully will hold a press conference to announce the District Attorney’s Citizens Academy:

Wednesday, August 28, 2002 @ 10:00 a.m.
District Attorney's Office
901 G St. 4th floor
John M. Price Conference Room

Across the country, as is in Sacramento, minority communities’ concerns relating to the criminal justice system surface every day. In an effort to improve communication and relations between minority communities and the criminal justice system and enhance multicultural and multi-ethnic sensitivity in the criminal justice community, District Attorney Jan Scully announces the District Attorney’s Citizens Academy.

A first of its kind, Citizens Academy provides participants with not only an important overview of the criminal justice system (the roles and challenges of law enforcement, District Attorney, and judiciary), but devotes three classes to diversity and race issues within the framework of the criminal justice system. The three topics identified for the fall class will be: Multicultural Sensitivity in the Criminal Justice System, Race as a Factor in the Criminal Justice System, and Perceptions of Disparate Treatment in the Criminal Justice System.

The District Attorney’s Citizens Academy, a ten-week course meeting once a week for two and a half hours, is designed to engage minority communities in communication and participation with representatives from the criminal justice system.  The mission of the academy is to provide information and resources to participants, mutual learning, critical analysis of issues, and exchange of ideas and perspectives. The vision of the Academy is to achieve improved relations and communication between minority communities and members of the criminal justice system.

Please join Jan Scully, along with Deputy District Attorney Alice Wong, and co-chairs of the District Attorney’s Multicultural Community Council Jerry Chong and Walter Edwards, as they unveil this exciting and innovative program.
