CASE OF INTEREST
Date: April 30, 2002
Case: Red Light
Camera Enforcement Cases
Contact: Cynthia
G. Besemer, Chief Deputy District Attorney, 874-6556
Jan Scully announced
today that her office would not prosecute Red Light Camera Enforcement
cases in the city and county pending a review of the Red Light Camera
Enforcement system. The review was prompted by discrepancies between
the manual prepared by the system’s provider and the actual functioning
of the system. The review is to ensure that the system complies
with state law and functions in an accurate manner. In the interim,
representatives of the District Attorney’s Office will move to dismiss
pending Red Light Camera Enforcement cases.
Ms. Scully expressed
confidence that, once these issues are resolved, her office will again
be in a position to vigorously prosecute such cases, and insure that
this worth-while law enforcement program will continue. Law enforcement
agencies have concluded that red light cameras assist in the reduction
of traffic related injuries and deaths.
Ms. Scully said, “We
are confident that the law enforcement agencies are committed to doing
all that is necessary to make sure the red light program complies with
the law.”
