Case: People v. Michael Richardson
Contact: Hilary Bagley, Deputy District Attorney
Telephone: 874-5817
On January 10, 2002, defendant Michael Richardson was sentenced to
23 years and 4 months in State Prison by the Honorable Gary Mullen for
his role in the attempted voluntary manslaughters of 6 neighbors on
September 8, 2000 in Strawberry Manor section of the City of Sacramento.
His daughter, Mukeya Richardson, who was 16 years old at the time of
the shootings, was sentenced as an adult to 1 year in county jail and
5 years formal felony probation for verbally encouraging her father
in the commission of his crimes.
Between June and September 2000, heated acrimony developed between
the Richardson family and several neighborhood families on the 3200
block of Western Avenue.
On September 8, 2000, the dispute escalated from a verbal argument
to a physical confrontation between the defendants' family and that
of the victims. After defendant Michael Richardson retrieved a .22 caliber
rifle from the trunk of a car, both the gun display and the altercation
led to several bottles being thrown at the Richardson' vehicles. With
much encouragement by his family, Michael Richardson then began firing
the rifle at his neighbors. Richardson's son-in-law, defendant Jason
Jake, also used the gun.
Overall 9 people were wounded between the ages of 12 and 44 years of
age. What started as a petty argument quickly evolved into unnecessary
deadly force leading to life threatening injuries.
Jason Jake is scheduled to be sentenced on February 22, 2002, in Department
36 of the Superior Court of Sacramento for shooting at an inhabited
dwelling and being a felon in possession of a firearm.
