Defendant Sentenced to Prison for Felony Animal Abuse

DATE:  September 21, 2017

CASE:  Kurt Williams (Case #17FE005877)

PROSECUTOR:  Supervising Deputy District Attorney Amy Holliday, Misdemeanor Unit

The Honorable Richard Sueyoshi sentenced Kurt Williams to 5 years and 4 months in state prison.  Williams had pled no contest to two counts of felony animal abuse and admitted to a prior 2016 strike conviction for assault with a deadly weapon.

Kurt Williams and his girlfriend lived together with the girlfriend’s 5-year-old female boxer.  In February and March 2017, Williams’ girlfriend observed a series of injuries that were inflicted on the dog.  The injuries would appear after Williams and his girlfriend had a fight.  The series of injuries included broken ribs, bruising, swelling, hematomas requiring surgical intervention, and a dislocated hip also requiring surgery.  The dog was taken to the veterinarian after each injury.  When the veterinarian’s office became aware that the injuries were occurring when the dog was alone with Williams, they encouraged the girlfriend to notify law enforcement.  The girlfriend filed a report with the Galt Police Department and an arrest warrant was issued for Williams.  When Williams was arrested, he was in possession of heroin and methamphetamine.
