Kenyatta Brown was convicted by a jury for the second-degree murder of 18-year-old Joslynn Sovenski. The jury also found true the allegation that Kenyatta Brown personally discharged a firearm causing death. Keyon Brown was convicted by a separate jury of accessory after the fact. Both defendants were also convicted of possession of an assault weapon.
On the night of September 18, 2015, brothers Kenyatta and Keyon Brown and the victim were at a party in Carmichael. Keyon Brown brought several guns to the apartment. The victim and her friend took videos of themselves handling and waiving the guns around while in the company of Kenyatta Brown and Keyon Brown. At 2:45 a.m., the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department received a 911 call reporting someone had been shot. Responding deputies found the victim on the apartment floor with a single gunshot to the chest. The victim died at the scene.
Initially, Keyon Brown repeatedly claimed that an unknown male shot the victim and fled the scene. He later admitted there was no unknown male shooter and that Kenyatta had been at the party, but left before deputies arrived. He also admitted to hiding one of the guns under a mattress. Based on Keyon Brown’s new statement, several witness statements and videos from that night, Kenyatta was identified as the shooter.
Kenyatta Brown faces a maximum sentence of 41 years to life in prison. Keyon Brown faces a maximum sentence of 4 years county jail prison. Sentencing is set for October 6, 2017, at 9:00 a.m. in Department 26 before the Honorable Curtis Fiorini.
