The Honorable Michael Sweet sentenced Khiem Tran to 16 years to life in prison. On January 15, 2016, a jury convicted Tran of second-degree murder. The jury also found true a use of knife allegation.
On October 10, 2013, Tran and his wife, Phuong Nguyen, went to a party at a friend’s house, where Tran consumed a number of beers. After returning home, the two began to argue. Tran ended up stabbing his wife six times in the back and twice in the chest. An hour after the stabbing, Tran’s blood alcohol level was between .12 and .17.
