CASE: Bennie Ray Ditto
PROSECUTOR: Deputy District Attorney Samuel Alexander, Career Criminal Prosecution Unit
District Attorney Anne Marie Schubert announced today that the Honorable Delbert Oros sentenced Bennie Ray Ditto to 21 years, 4 months plus 25 years to life in prison. On January 21, 2015, a jury convicted Ditto of assault on a peace officer with a deadly weapon, evading a peace officer, driving a stolen vehicle, and possession of a stolen vehicle.
Ditto has nine prior serious and/or violent felony convictions, including robbery, assault on a peace officer, criminal threats, carjacking, and first-degree burglary.
On March 27, 2014, a Sacramento police officer attempted to stop Ditto as he was driving erratically in a stolen pick-up truck near the intersection of Sutterville and 24th Street. Ditto fled before stopping in the middle of the road. He then deliberately reversed the truck and hit the officer’s patrol car, disabling it. Ditto went on to lead multiple officers on a 20 minute pursuit, during which Ditto struck a parked vehicle, drove into oncoming traffic, ran numerous stop signs and stop lights, and drove at speeds in excess of 80 mph. The pursuit ended at the CarMax on East Stockton Boulevard, where Ditto was able to escape.
Officers later located the abandoned truck. DNA evidence was collected from the truck and analyzed by the District Attorney’s Laboratory of Forensic Services, which led to the identification of Ditto and his subsequent conviction.
