Case of Interest: Alex Bruno

DATE:  June 26, 2015

CASE:  Alex Bruno

PROSECUTOR:  Deputy District Attorney Morgan Gire, Gangs & Hate Crimes Unit

District Attorney Anne Marie Schubert announced today that 29-year-old Alex Bruno was convicted by jury of two counts of attempted murder, each with enhancements for causing great bodily injury and discharging a firearm causing great bodily injury.

In September 2012, Nick Stevenson was at a family birthday party at their South Sacramento home.  Alex Bruno’s girlfriend was at the party.  Bruno went to the house to get his girlfriend because he disliked the Stevenson family and didn’t want her at their house.  As Bruno and his girlfriend pulled away from the house in their car, Bruno fired shots through the rear window.  Mr. Stevenson was struck in the abdomen, critically injuring him.  A 16-year-old friend of the family was struck in the back and seriously injured as he turned to run away from the gunfire.

The car Bruno was driving was recovered a week later.  The District Attorney’s Crime Lab matched broken glass found inside the door frame of the car to the glass left at the scene.  Witnesses initially denied seeing the identity of the shooter.  They later came forward to identify Bruno, who remained at large for several months before his arrest.

Bruno faces a maximum potential sentence of 67 years to life in prison.  Sentencing is set for July 24, 2015 at 9:00 a.m. in Department 11 before the Honorable Trena Burger-Plavan.
