CASE: William David Meek
PROSECUTOR: Deputy District Attorney Hilary Bagley
District Attorney Anne Marie Schubert announced that the Honorable Ben Davidian sentenced 47-year-old William David Meek to the maximum 3 years in county jail prison with no split sentence. On May 8, 2015, Meek pled no contest to felony animal cruelty with no negotiated plea. In addition, he cannot own, possess, maintain, live with or care for animals for 10 years. Meek had previously been sentenced to 270 days consecutive on a separate drug possession case after being dropped from the Prop 36 program. He will serve a total of 3 years, 9 months.
In June 2014, Meek told his girlfriend he was taking her 13-year-old border collie “Zelda” to the City of Sacramento Front Street shelter and left with the dog. Meek did not take Zelda to the shelter. Instead, he placed a bowling ball and large river rock in a bag and tied the 25 lbs. of weight to one end of Zelda’s leash and the other end to Zelda’s collar, which he had tightly adjusted around her snout. He then drove to a chosen location in East Sacramento and dumped Zelda into the cold, fast waters of the American River. A resident in the nearby River Park neighborhood spotted Zelda’s bloated remains floating several days later, still partially weighted down by the bag. A necropsy on Zelda revealed river debris in her trachea with findings that her likely cause of death was hypoxia, resulting from inhalation of water.
When Meek realized a felony animal abuse warrant was outstanding for him, he fled to Nevada. He has remained in custody since his arrest on November 3, 2014.
