Case of Interest: Webster Lee

DATE: June 10, 2015

CASE: Webster Lee

PROSECUTOR: Deputy District Attorney Kevin Jones, Felony Bureau

District Attorney Anne Marie Schubert announced that Webster Lee was convicted by jury of attempted murder, attempted voluntary manslaughter, four counts of assault with a firearm, spousal abuse, false imprisonment, carjacking, robbery, criminal threats, vehicle theft and resisting a police officer by force.  The jury further found true allegations that Lee was armed with a shotgun during these offenses, and that he personally discharged that shotgun causing great bodily injury to two victims.

The jury heard evidence during a sanity phase and determined that Lee was sane at the time he committed these acts.

On February 3, 2014, Lee became angry with his wife and brandished a shotgun.  He then ordered a female occupant of the apartment to tie his wife up.  Over several hours, Lee abused his wife, including choking and burning her with cigarettes.  When the female occupant armed herself with a kitchen knife, Lee shot her with the shotgun.

He then went upstairs to an adjacent apartment and demanded the car keys from the residents at gunpoint, threatening to shoot several people inside.  He began to load his wife and the wounded female into the carjacked vehicle to flee the scene before officers arrived.  An uninvolved male adult encountered Lee near the side of the driveway.  Lee shot the man three times in the back.

Lee drove the two female victims to Concord, where he let them out on a street corner.   He stole another vehicle, and was ultimately pulled over on Highway 80 in Solano County by California Highway Patrol Officers.   Lee exited the vehicle and charged at the officers.  One of the officers shot Lee in the arm.  As medical aid was being rendered to him, in car camera video captured Lee attempting to get one of the officer’s handgun from a holster.

Lee faces a maximum potential sentence of 63 years to life in prison.  Sentencing is set for July 10, 2015 in Department 41 at 9:30 a.m. before the Honorable Helena Gweon.
