CASE: Jasmine Maria Velasquez & Jose Maria Perez
PROSECUTOR: Deputy District Attorney Samuel Alexander, Career Criminal Prosecution Unit
District Attorney Anne Marie Schubert announced today that the Honorable Helena Gweon sentenced Jasmine Maria Velasquez to 151 years and 4 months to life in prison and Jose Maria Perez to 25 years in prison.
On March 18, 2015, a jury convicted Velasquez of four counts of armed carjacking, seven counts of armed robbery and illegal possession of a firearm. It was also found that all of the crimes were carried out in association with, and for the benefit of, the Sureno street gang. The same jury convicted Perez of being personally armed with a firearm during a robbery in association with the Sureno street gang.
Between April 16, 2013 and May 22, 2013, Velasquez planned, organized and participated in a series of carjackings and robberies. Most of the proceeds of these crimes were funneled to a member of the Sureno criminal street gang, who was then serving a state prison sentence at Folsom Prison. Perez personally committed one of the robberies organized and planned by Velasquez.
Velasquez has a prior robbery conviction from 2012. Both defendants were on some form of felony parole or supervision when these current crimes were committed.
