District Attorney Anne Marie Schubert announced today that 20-year-old Gilberto Cardona was convicted by jury of second-degree murder. The jury also found true a gun use and gang enhancement allegation.
On September 28, 2013, Jesus Macias went to the Beacon Gas Station at 2101 El Camino Avenue. Mr. Macias was confronted by two Howe Park Sureño gang members who started a fight with him. The fight spilled out into the Beacon parking lot, at which point two other men joined the fight against Mr. Macias. As the four men were beating Mr. Macias, Cardona, also a validated Howe Park Sureño, rode up on his bicycle. Mr. Macias was able to break free from the four men attacking him, and fled across the parking lot. Cardona turned on his bicycle and fired two shots at the victim as he was fleeing, fatally wounding him.
Cardona faces a maximum potential sentence of 40 years to life in prison. Sentencing is set for May 20, 2015 at 1:30 p.m. in Department 20 before the Honorable Michael Sweet.
