CASE: Cornelius Jones & Jovan Felix
PROSECUTOR: Deputy District Attorney Catrina Skor, Felony Bureau
District Attorney Anne Marie Schubert announced that on November 20, 2014, a jury convicted Cornelius Jones (age 36) of attempted murder and assault. The jury also found true that Jones committed the attempted murder with premeditation and that he personally used a deadly weapon and personally inflicted great bodily injury. A separate jury for Jovan Felix (age 36) was unable to reach a unanimous verdict and the case was re-assigned to trial in March 2015. On April 20, 2015, a second jury convicted Felix of attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon and assault by means of force likely to produce great bodily injury.
On August 17, 2013, Felix went to Level Up Lounge bar on J Street. While at the bar, he was served a drink he did not like. After several offers by the bartenders to make another drink, Felix became angry and said, “This is how places get burned up.” He left the bar and returned at 2:00 a.m. with Jones. Felix and Jones paced outside the bar and Jones popped two tires on one of the bartender’s vehicle. As the group of bartenders exited the building, Jones approached one of them from behind and punched him in the back of the head. Felix ran up to the group armed with a knife in his hand. Jones also had a knife out and began to chase one of the victims down the middle of J Street. Jones stabbed the victim in the abdomen in front of Chicago Fire. Jones and Felix then fled the scene.
Deputy District Attorney Catrina Skor said in her closing arguments, “What an absolutely unnecessary and entirely avoidable use of violence on that night.”
Jones and Felix had committed a prior armed robbery in January 1994 and both have prior strikes. Jones has a prior strike from September 2001 for stabbing a victim multiple times. Felix has a prior strike from December 1998 for shooting a victim in the back and fleeing in the victim’s car.
On February 27, 2015, the Honorable Lawrence Brown sentenced Jones to 36 years to life in prison. Felix will be sentenced on May 22, 2015 at 9:00 a.m. in front of the Honorable Robert Twiss.
