CASE: Lafonzo Ray Turner
PROSECUTOR: Deputy District Attorney Jennifer Tucker, Prison Crimes Unit
District Attorney Anne Marie Schubert announced today that Lafonzo Ray Turner was convicted by jury of battery on a custodial officer with a great bodily injury enhancement. The Honorable Eugene Balonon sentenced Turner to the maximum sentence of 18 years in prison.
Turner was an inmate in the California State Prison Sacramento. On September 14, 2013, he became disruptive in the visiting room. His visit was terminated and he was instructed by the victim, a correctional officer, to return back to the prison yard. Turner refused and then struck the victim in the left eye, causing an orbital fracture and concussion. He continued to attack the victim before other officers intervened.
Turner had been serving a 50 to life prison sentence for a 2007 murder with a firearm conviction.
