District Attorney Anne Marie Schubert cautions Sacramento County senior citizens and all members of the community about the “Grandparent Scam.”
Scam artists are stealing money from elders by preying on grandparents who both love and fear for the safety of their grandchildren. Targeting elders, scammers contact victims by phone and warn them their grandchild is in danger. They claim they need money to help get their loved one out of trouble and returned home safely. Once a payment is made, scammers often come back numerous times demanding more money.
DA Schubert advises the public to take precaution and to be aware of this and other similar scams that ask for money, especially if instructed to pay using Western Union or a Green Dot MoneyPak prepaid card.
