CASE: Alias McLaughlin
PROSECUTOR: Deputy District Attorney Sheri Greco, Homicide Unit
District Attorney Anne Marie Schubert announced today that Alias McLaughlin was convicted
by jury of second-degree murder and assault on a child with force likely to produce great bodily
injury, resulting in the death of his 21-day-old daughter Ada.
On May 10, 2013, McLaughlin became angry that baby Ada would not stop crying. Ada
weighed 5 pounds and was 19 inches in length. Over the course of a few hours, McLaughlin
held baby Ada upside down and shook her, threw her into the bassinet multiple times and then
threw her onto the ground with such force that she sustained a 1.5 inch fracture to her skull and
severe brain trauma that caused her death. Ada’s mother was also assaulted when she tried to
intervene and stop the abuse of baby Ada.
McLaughlin had a prior conviction of domestic violence against Ada’s mother. He faces a
sentence of 25 years to life in state prison. Sentencing is set for February 27, 2015 at 1:30 p.m.
in Department 16 before the Honorable Marjorie Koller.
