CASE: Bennie Ray Ditto
PROSECUTOR: Deputy District Attorney Samuel Alexander, Career Criminal Unit
District Attorney Anne Marie Schubert announced today that Bennie Ray Ditto was convicted by jury of assault on a peace officer with a deadly weapon, evading a peace officer, driving a stolen vehicle, and possession of a stolen vehicle.
Early in the morning of March 27, 2014, a Sacramento police officer attempted to stop Ditto as he was driving erratically in a stolen pick-up truck near the intersection of Sutterville and 24th Street. Ditto fled in the truck before stopping in the middle of the road. He then deliberately reversed the car and hit the front of the officer’s patrol car, disabling it. Ditto went on to lead multiple officers on a 20-minute pursuit, during which Ditto struck a parked vehicle, drove into oncoming traffic, ran numerous stop signs and stop lights, and drove at speeds in excess of 80 mph. The pursuit ended at the CarMax on East Stockton Boulevard. Officers attempted to set up a perimeter around the CarMax, but Ditto was able to escape.
Officers later located the abandoned truck. DNA evidence gathered from the truck and analyzed by the District Attorney’s Crime Lab led to the identification of Ditto and his subsequent conviction.
Ditto faces a maximum potential sentence of 38 years to life in state prison. Sentencing is set for February 20, 2015 at 9:00 a.m. in Department 27 before the Honorable Delbert Oros.
