Case of Interest: Webster Lee

DATE:  July 10, 2015

CASE:  Webster Lee

PROSECUTOR:  Deputy District Attorney Kevin Jones, Felony Bureau

District Attorney Anne Marie Schubert announced today that the Honorable Helena Gweon sentenced Webster Lee to 55 years to life in prison.  On June 4, 2015, a jury convicted Lee of attempted murder, attempted voluntary manslaughter, four counts of assault with a firearm, spousal abuse, false imprisonment, carjacking, robbery, criminal threats, vehicle theft and resisting a police officer by force.  The jury also found true that Lee was armed with a shotgun during these offenses, and that he personally discharged that shotgun causing great bodily injury to two victims.

On February 3, 2014, Lee became angry with his wife and brandished a shotgun.  He ordered a female occupant of the apartment to tie up his wife.  Over several hours, Lee abused his wife, including choking and burning her with cigarettes.  When the female occupant armed herself with a kitchen knife, Lee shot her.  He then went to a nearby apartment and demanded the residents give him their car keys at gunpoint, threatening to shoot several people.  Lee was putting his wife and the wounded female in the carjacked vehicle to flee the scene when he encountered a man.  Lee shot the man three times in the back.

He then drove the two female victims to Concord, where he let them out on a street corner.   He stole another vehicle, and was ultimately pulled over on Highway 80 in Solano County by California Highway Patrol officers.   Lee exited the vehicle and charged at the officers.  One of the officers shot Lee in the arm.  As medical aid was being rendered to him, in car camera video captured Lee attempting to get one of the officer’s handgun from a holster.

The jury heard evidence during a sanity phase and determined that Lee was sane at the time he committed these acts.
