Case of Interest: Matthew Brownwood & Deonte Upchurch

DATE: June 5, 2015

CASE: Matthew Brownwood & Deonte Upchurch

PROSECUTOR: Deputy District Attorney Andrew Smith, Homicide Unit

District Attorney Anne Marie Schubert announced that 34-year-old Matthew Brownwood and 27-year-old Deonte Upchurch were convicted by jury of first-degree murder and robbery.   The jury also found true the special circumstance that Brownwood committed the murder during the commission of the robbery and the allegation he was a felon in possession of a gun.

On July 20, 2014, Upchurch and Brownwood went to Wesley Camp’s house to get some marijuana.  The defendants discussed the amount and price with Mr. Camp.  Suddenly, both defendants grabbed marijuana off the kitchen table and ran for the front door.   Mr. Camp caught up to Brownwood and a brief struggle ensued before Brownwood shot Mr. Camp in the chest at point blank range.  The defendants fled the house, but were arrested the next morning.

Brownwood faces a maximum potential sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole plus 31 years and 8 months in prison.  Upchurch faces a maximum potential sentence of 25 years to life in prison plus an additional 6 years.  Sentencing is set for July 17, 2015 at 9:00 a.m. in Department 42 before the Honorable Lawrence Brown.
