CASE: Victor Rodgers
PROSECUTOR: Deputy District Attorney Thomas Asker, Homicide Unit
District Attorney Anne Marie Schubert announced that Victor Rodgers was convicted by jury of first-degree murder. The jury also found true that Rodgers used a firearm in the commission of that murder.
On May 22, 2012, Kerry Burns was shot and killed in front of his mother’s residence on Wyda Way. Homicide detectives from the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department determined that Kerry Burns had been involved in a bank check scheme with Rodgers.
Text messages found on Kerry Burns’ cell phone implied Rodgers was not getting his cut and the bank was investigating the fraud. Several witness and physical evidence showed that Rodgers walked up and shot Kerry Burns without any provocation or warning. Rodgers was arrested in Las Vegas on May 31, 2012. He admitted shooting Kerry Burns, but said it was in self-defense.
Rodgers faces a maximum potential sentence of 50 years to life in prison. Sentencing is set for August 7, 2015 at 9:00 a.m. in Department 25 of the Sacramento Superior Court.
